Planning a Kitchen Remodel in Winter Garden? How to Set a Realistic Budget Before You Call Contractors

Planning a Kitchen Remodel in Winter Garden? How to Set a Realistic Budget Before You Call Contractors

A realistic kitchen remodeling budget starts with three questions: are you keeping the current layout, what quality of cabinets do you want, and are you moving any plumbing? Answer those, set aside a cushion of 10 to 15 percent for surprises, and you'll have a number that holds up when contractors start pricing the job.

Most homeowners start with a photo and no idea what it should cost. That's normal. At Guy A Remodeling, we'd rather you walk into the process informed than surprised. When you're ready to turn a rough number into a real one, give our team a call at (407) 460-8588.

How is a typical kitchen remodeling budget divided?

Cabinets are almost always the biggest line item, followed by labor, appliances, and countertops. Flooring, lighting, backsplash, and fixtures make up the rest.

Industry surveys from the National Kitchen and Bath Association have long put cabinets and hardware at close to a third of a typical kitchen budget, with installation labor next, then appliances, then countertops. Flooring usually lands somewhere under 10 percent. Your kitchen won't match those numbers exactly, but they're a useful starting frame. If you're keeping the appliances you have, a bigger share of the budget can go to cabinets and counters.

Here in Winter Garden, a lot of the homes in Horizon West were built with builder grade kitchens in the 2000s and 2010s. Those layouts often work fine. What owners want is better cabinets, quartz counters, and a floor that holds up. Flooring is easy to underestimate. A kitchen floor often continues into the living and dining areas, so it gets priced with them. Tile and luxury vinyl plank are both good fits for a Florida slab, and our flooring services page explains how each one performs.

Where should you splurge and where can you save?

Spend on the things you touch every day and the things that are expensive to replace later. Save on items you can easily upgrade down the road.

Cabinet boxes and drawer hardware are worth the money. Soft close drawers, solid construction, and good organizers change how the kitchen feels every single day, and replacing cabinets later means tearing out the counters too. Countertops are the other smart splurge. Quartz is the most requested surface we install, because it handles daily cooking without sealing and looks clean for years.

Save on the things that are simple to swap. Light fixtures, cabinet pulls, the faucet, and even some appliances can be upgraded later without touching anything else. A classic white subway tile backsplash costs far less than a statement tile and rarely looks dated. If you host a lot, maybe after the Saturday Winter Garden Farmers Market downtown, put the money into the island and the prep space, and keep the rest of the finishes simple. A good remodeler will help you rank your wants so the budget follows your priorities.

How do layout changes and plumbing affect the cost?

Keeping the sink, range, and dishwasher where they are is the single biggest way to control cost. Moving them means new plumbing, electrical, and sometimes gas or venting, and that adds up quickly.

Most Central Florida homes sit on a concrete slab, so moving a sink across the room can mean cutting the slab to run new drain lines. Relocating a range may need a new electrical circuit or gas line, plus a vent route. Taking out a wall to open the kitchen might involve a beam if the wall is load bearing. None of that is impossible, and sometimes it's the whole point of the project. It just belongs in the budget from day one.

Permits come into play here too. Homes inside Winter Garden's city limits go through the city's building department, while many homes in Horizon West are in unincorporated Orange County. Plumbing, electrical, and structural changes all need permits and inspections, and a remodeler who handles that process for you saves time and headaches.

Why is a walkthrough at your home better than online cost averages?

Online averages mix every kind of kitchen in every market. A walkthrough prices your kitchen, with your measurements, your layout, and your priorities.

We saw why that matters with a homeowner in Winter Garden who was an accomplished home cook. He wanted a kitchen worthy of a real chef. Then, while he was still budgeting, his air conditioner broke and had to be replaced. We helped him strike a balance that didn't break the bank but still gave him the satisfaction of a professional looking kitchen. No online calculator could have made that call with him.

In person, we measure the space, check the condition of the subfloor and walls, and talk through where your money matters most. You leave with a written estimate you can actually plan around. Our kitchen remodeling projects usually take four to eight weeks once work begins, and the plan starts with that first visit. If you're ready to find out what your kitchen will really cost, call (407) 460-8588 or schedule a consultation at your home.
