What does good drywall work actually look like?
You should not be able to find the repair. That is the whole test. A patched wall that reads as new wall, with no ridge you can feel and no shadow you can see, is the mark of drywall done right.
Look at the corners first. They should be straight and crisp, top to bottom, not wavy where the tape wandered. Run your hand along a finished seam and you should feel flat plane, not a low spot on one side and a hump on the other. Seams get hidden because the joint compound is feathered wide, sanded true, and blended into the surrounding board so the repair is bigger than most people expect and invisible when it is done.
The real judge is raking light. Late afternoon sun coming sideways across a wall in an Orlando living room will expose every bump and roller mark that flat noon light hides. We check our work under that kind of light before we prime, because primer and paint do not fill flaws, they announce them. When we close a wall after a plumbing repair, the patch gets the same seam treatment as new hang, not a quick smear of mud. That patience is why the fix holds and disappears. How do you handle the paint?
Prep is most of the job. Paint is the easy part at the end. Before a brush touches the wall, we fill nail holes and dings, sand the patches flat, caulk the gaps where trim meets wall, and prime bare mud so the topcoat sits even.
Bare joint compound drinks paint differently than the wall around it. Skip primer over fresh mud and you get flashing, those dull halos that show every patch once the light hits. So we prime. Then we cut clean lines by hand where the wall meets ceiling and trim, because tape alone bleeds if the surface is textured.
Humidity sets the pace here. In a closed up bathroom or a laundry room in Kissimmee, fresh mud and primer need real time to dry before the next coat, or the finish flashes and the sheen goes blotchy. How long does drywall and painting take and what are the steps?
A single room repaint over sound walls can be a day or two. New drywall for a room runs longer, because mud has to dry between coats and you cannot cheat that.
The order is set. We hang the board and screw it off. We tape the seams and inside corners. Then come the mud coats, usually three, each one wider and thinner than the last, with drying time in between so the compound sets hard instead of cracking. We sand, prime, and paint. In a humid room that drying time stretches, and we plan around it rather than fight it.
Dust is the part homeowners dread, so we handle it up front. Floors get covered. We seal off doorways with plastic to keep sanding dust out of the rest of the house, and we vacuum and wipe down before we prime. When we leave for the day the room is swept and your furniture is protected, not buried under a gray film. Water damage changes the timeline, because before we close any wall we find where the water came from and confirm it is fixed. Closing a wall over a live leak just means opening it again later.
What textures and finishes can you match?
Knockdown and orange peel are the two wall textures you see most in Central Florida homes, and we match both. The trick is dialing the spray and the timing so new blends into old and the repair vanishes.
Knockdown is that flattened, mottled look. Orange peel is the finer, pebbled spray. A patch fails when the new texture is too heavy or too fine next to the wall around it, so we test on scrap, adjust, and feather the edges out past the repair so there is no hard line where new meets old. Smooth walls are their own skill, since a flat wall hides nothing and every trowel mark shows under raking light.
Popcorn ceilings are common in older homes around Orlando and Lakeland, and scraping them off is one of the requests we get most. We scrape the texture, skim the ceiling smooth, sand, and prime it so it reads as a clean flat surface, then paint. On the wall finish itself, sheen is a real choice. Flat hides imperfections on ceilings and low traffic walls. Eggshell and satin wipe down easier in halls and kids' rooms. Semigloss holds up on trim and in bathrooms.
