You can install LVP yourself, and the click together planks make it look simple. The catch is that the clicking is the easy part. The floor really lives or dies on two things most first timers underestimate, the prep underneath and how tightly the planks lock together. Get those wrong and you will feel it every single day.

Can you really install LVP yourself?
Yes, you can. Of every floor out there, LVP is the most forgiving to install and the fastest to tear out, which is a big part of why it shows up in so many remodels.
Demolition is quick because the planks are joined together. Pop the first couple and the rest lift in seconds, nothing like jackhammering a tile floor out piece by piece. The install goes fast too once you have the motion down. It is a world away from tile, which takes a couple of years of doing it before you are any good. LVP you can pick up quickly. A pro does it all week, so the muscle memory is already there. The honest catch is that you still have to learn how to seat and lock the planks before you practice on your own living room. The tools are simple too, a tapping block and a pull bar, not a wet saw and a trowel.
What goes wrong when homeowners install it themselves?
Two things, loose planks and bad prep. Both are small mistakes that turn into daily annoyances you cannot unsee.
Planks that are not locked tight work loose within a month. Once that starts, the floor shifts and clicks underfoot and walking across the room becomes a nightmare. Prep is even less forgiving. Drop the tiniest pebble or leave a crumb of old thinset under a board and it telegraphs straight through, so you feel the bump with every step, even over padding.
This is where going over an old tile floor trips people up. You cannot just pull the tile and start laying planks. You have to grind and buff the slab until it is genuinely clean and flat, because LVP gives you no forgiveness at all. A floor that looked fine on day one can feel like a bad road by the end of the month if the prep was rushed.
Is hiring a pro for LVP even worth the cost?
Usually, yes, and the reason surprises people. You are not paying for years of tile skill here. LVP labor is cheap, so a professional install costs far less than you would expect for a whole floor.
Tile carries real labor cost because it is slow, skilled work. LVP is the opposite, fast and inexpensive to install. So the money you save by doing it yourself is small, while the thing you are risking, a floor that bumps, shifts, or loosens, is the expensive part to fix later. The floor is the one surface every room shares, so a bad one shows everywhere. When the savings are thin and the downside is a whole room redone, the math quietly points to hiring it out. That is why plenty of Central Florida homeowners who absolutely could lay it themselves still hand it off. You can see the floors we install on our flooring services page.
How do you choose LVP that holds up?
Look at two things before you ever look at the color, the padding and the wear layer. They decide how the floor feels and how long it lasts.
Padding comes first for comfort. LVP on its own is thin and a little hard underfoot, so a plank with attached padding simply feels better. If the one you like has none, buy a separate pad and lay it down. The wear layer matters even more. It is the clear coat over the printed design, and thicker lasts longer. Older LVP started around 3 to 5 mil. Today the good stuff runs 22 to 28 mil. If you have pets, heavy traffic, or a rental, go thick, because a thin coat scratches through to the print and the floor is finished.
Picking the right product for how you actually live is half the battle, and it is part of what we sort out with you in a free design consultation. The right plank on a properly prepped floor is the combination that lasts for years instead of months.
